Ask the veterinarian for specific recommendations for the procedures that will ensure your pet's health.

Ovariohysterectomy (spaying) is the complete removal of the ovaries and uterus in the female. It is recommended at 3-4  months of age (when the pig has reached 15 lbs.). This surgery is much more difficult to perform on larger pigs.

Castration (neutering) is the complete removal of the testicles in males. It is performed when the pig is 5 – 10 lbs. and help reduce aggressiveness.

Breeding and Newborn Pigs.Newborn pigs should have an iron injection and teeth clipping within 3 days of birth.  Contact our office for additional information for breeding adults at least 2 months prior to breeding.

Vaccinations are an important part of your pig’s health care program, but even more important is the complete physical examination that we perform at the same time.  It is important that we know that your pig is in good health before we vaccinate. Our doctors will discuss any findings with you and make recommendations for your pig’s health care needs.  You will also be able to ask any questions that you may have at this time.

Pleurogard 4: A combination vaccine that protects against respiratory disease (bordatella, pasteurella, and hemophilus diseases) and erysipelas ( a severe body wide disease).

Leptoshield 5:  A combination vaccine that protects against a group of 5 bacterial disease that affects the kidneys, liver & eyes.

Tetanus vaccine and Clostrishield: Vaccines that protect against a group of severe bacterial diseases that affected muscle tissue and other organ systems.

Rabies: a virus affecting the brain of all warm-blooded animals that is fatal. All local cities & counties require a rabies vaccination.

Intestinal Parasites can affect the health of your pet pig. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to humans. Pigs should be checked regularly for intestinal parasites and de-wormed as necessary.

Diet Recommendations

Feeding a proper diet in the proper amount is one of the most important aspects of pet pig care. Please adhere carefully to the following guidelines:

1.      Supply Mazzuri starter (20% protein, 5% fat, 3% fiber) free choice daily until 8 weeks of age. You may sprinkle a small amount of starter in the milk at each feeding. Switch to grower (16% protein, 3% fat, 8 % fiber). Wean piglets at 6 weeks of age. Change the starter daily so that it does not become moldy.

2.      Feed grower until 1 year of age. Give 1.5% of the body weight daily.

3.      Adult pigs should be fed at 1.5% body weight.

4.      Supplement pigs after weaning with 50 IU vitamin E once a week.
